What is Knee Replacement? Knee replacement is a type of prosthesis used in the treatment of severely damaged knee joint. It can be applied if there is severe pain, inflammation, limitation of movement in the knee as a result of damage. The damaged tissues in the knee joint are cleaned and the kneecap is removed and replaced with a knee prosthesis made of tissue compatible material. Although it is mostly applied to elderly people, there is no age limit for this surgery. There are two types of knee prosthesis as full and partial prosthesis. How is Knee Prosthesis Made? The patient is examined by the doctor and as a result of the analyzes, it can be decided to apply a knee prosthesis. The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia. No pain is felt during the surgery. An incision is made in the kneecap area and the knee joint is reached. Damaged bone, ligament and cartilage tissues in the knee joint area are cleaned. A suitable knee prosthesis selected is fixed to the bone in the joint area. After suturing, the surgery is completed. In Which Situations Is Knee Replacement Surgery Applied? - Knee calcification (osteoarthritis), - Inflammatory rheumatism affecting the knee joint (rheumatoid arthritis), - Pain and limitation of movement in the knee joint, - Deformity of the kneecap, - Presence of severe damage to the cartilage of the knee joint, - Knee ailments that cannot be achieved with non-surgical treatment methods, - Presence of fracture in the knee joint area.
